Griffin Technologies iTrip nano FM Transmitter Review

published: 27/09/06 last updated: 27/09/06

iPod accessory company Griffin Technology (site) sent us their iTrip nano for review. The iTrip nano is an FM-Transmitter for the original iPod nano. This FM transmitter docks onto the iPod nano and extends on the backside of the player. The result is a very compact combination. The iTrip user interface is on the iPod nano screen, which is actually the best feature of this FM transmitter.

The iTrip nano starts at $17 at these retailers.

Hands-on Experience
I just have to dock the iPod nano in the iTrip FM transmitter, hit the button on the side and the display shows the current selected frequency. Hitting the button a couple of times leads me through the handful of option screens available. As I am testing this FM transmitter in Europe I switched the region in one of the screens. It is hard to find a free frequency on my stereo here, but I found one after a while and matched it on the iTrip. The signal comes across crystal clear. Nothing to complain about here. The range is given with 10-50ft. This is really very much dependent where you are, inside a house, a car or outside in the garden. The antenna of the receiving stereo also has a big impact.

Features
The Griffin iTrip remembers the last three used frequencies as presets. The volume is automatically adjusted if it is set above 65%. 65% is producing the best results. When I switch of ff the nano the iTrip also switches off. After 2 min. without playing music the FM transmitter also shuts down to not drain the battery of the iPod nano. Equalizer settings and the choice between mono and stereo broadcast are available as well.

Frequency display on the iPod nano screen. Simple navigation with the button on the side (up, down and select).

The iTrip nano features a mini USB port, to let me charge and sync. the iPod nano with the FM transmitter plugged in. It would have been nicer to be able to use the standard iPod cable for this, but it works.

Good industrial design. No dangling wires, no extra display. This FM Transmitter is made for the iPod nano.

Conclusion

The Griffin Technology iTrip nano is a well rounded iPod nano accessory. It is very well manufactured and the design fits perfectly to the originial iPod nano. To present the user interface on the iPod screen itself is neat. The single button navigation works well and is intuitive. The quality of FM transmission is very solid and clear. To feature the original iPod plug instead of the mini USB port would have been nice.
