AudioCubes, a store focused on exporting Japanese Audio Gadgets to the US and elsewhere, sent us the Sony MDR-EX71SL earphones.
The MDR-EX71SL are also available on the US market, but only in black. AudioCubes also sells the white version of the Sony Fontopia MDR-EX71SL earbuds, which is only available in Japan. To get white ones is of course important for all the iPod users out there.

Overview
We received the black version of the Japanese import Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia earphone. Also branded with Sony N.U.D.E EX. The package they are coming in has labels and text in Japanese. These earphones are to be worn inside the ear, like ear plugs to reduce the outside noise and get the full sound quality. To be able to put them inside the ear canal there are exchangeable little soft silicon earbuds on the headset. The MDR-EX71SL comes bundled with three different sizes of silicon buds: Small, Medium and Large. It is pre-assembled with the medium ones, which fit into my ear perfectly. I tried the small ones and they are not big enough to stay inside the ear canal. At first the feeling is a bit wired, mostly throught the fact that I don't hear much once they are in. After a while they feel quite comfortable. They are very light and the cable is nicely soft making them nice to wear.

I tested the MDR-EX71SL with my Toshiba G20 20GB MP3 Player (G20 Review, Buy Toshiba G21 here). The black color of the headphones fits to this player. iPod users should go for the white MDR-EX71SL. The normal G20 earphones are hang-type sets which are quite decent sounding. The Sony earphones compared to the Toshiba ones definitely sound fuller and provide a much deeper bass. I tested it with still my favorite Hotel Costes CDs. They also much more reduce the outside noise, even if not switched on compared to the hang-type earphones. I will definitely try those on my next flight - they are basically ear plug and headset in one.
The fact that they stick inside the ear canal makes them also great for running, they will not likely fall out.

Conclusion
The Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia earphone are a great accessory for MP3 Player to gain a fuller sound and reduce the outside noise pretty dramatically compared to standard hang-type earphones.
