Overview
The Tomy Microaqua W I received comes with
Scleropages Formosus fish. To get started I fill the fish tank with
water. Next is to go and buy batteries. The Microaqua W needs 3 AAA
batteries for the blue light and a D-cell for the water circulation.
I release the Scleropages Formosus carefully into the water and
switch on the aquarium at the bottom stand.

Scleropages Formosus (Tomy's
Description):
The asian arowana is a very attractive big fish. The shape is
dynamic and beautiful. Some grow up as long as 1m. They are
carnivorous but not brutal. They are strong and healthy, some
record says one lived more than 100 years. |
A motor sound becomes audible.
Interestingly the water tank and the stand where the motor and the
D-cell battery are housed have no physical connection. Meaning the
water circulation in the tank is achieved through magnetic or
induction fields. The rotating parts in the water tank are hidden
under the brown hills in the corners.
The fishes did not want to leave the water surface even when was
shaking the water tank they stayed floating on top. Then I
remembered my physics lessons and added a drop of liquid soap to the
water in the tank. Now the fish were nicely floating in the tank and
move around randomly by the water circulation.
What is bothering though is the noise of the motor. For a desk toy
it would be nice if it would be completely silent. When switched
off, the Scleropages Formosus are not moving at all of course. The
blue light makes the fish-tank look like a real one. The fish itself
have fine detail and a movable tail.

Conclusion
Seems Micro Aquariums are popular in Asia, as
Fancylogic offers
several models of them. For a desk toy it is too loud for my
taste. On the positive part the Tomy Aqua W is nicely made and the
fish have good detail. Another negative is the amount of batteries
this toy needs. I find the solar powered
Flip Flap a better
choice to decorate a desk with.
