The Accupix MP Glass MPG-230A Video Glasses and portable player are maybe the future of portable video and movie players. There is no screen on the player, rather the user is wearing video glasses to watch video on a virtual screen. CNGTek sent us a sample of this cool gadget. Ken already calls them cortex stimulating theater injectors. Read his review below.

The Accupix MP Glass MPG-230 bundle (MPEC - Mobile Personal Entertainment Centre) is selling for $649.00
on CNGTek. They also sell the Accupix MP Glasses without the player for $449.00.

Overview
Fun, cool, private, advanced, high-tech, mobile, futuristic and state-of-the-art. These are just a few words to describe this hip and, what I call, cortex stimulating theater injectors. It’s the Matrix without the pain. Hey, DARPA, you might want to give Accupix a call for ideas! Guess what? You need a pair of these to keep out the rest of the world and immerse yourself in your own. View games, DVD, movies, PMP/PVR, VCR, TV and other sources of audio/video on your 30” theater right in front of those ole’ peepers while feeling like you’re relaxing in your favorite chair at six feet (2m). You can be selfish, for once, and not let anyone see what you’re watching (tell your boss you’re viewing your latest PowerPoint presentation of other work). Always wished you could just watch/listen to those R and XXX movies, raunchy comedy broadcasts and photos without feeling embarrassed in addition to your favorite shows, music and/or data/computer files? Well, strap these bad boys on and never worry about those around bothering you or seeing what flashing in front of those eyes of yours. Think you might be viewed as a “geek” with them on? Think again. You’ll be the attention-getter wherever you go. I don’t think of myself as a techno geek and with the video glasses on, I feel just fine thank you. The only thing I see and feel around me are those vibes of jealousy and wishing they had these themselves. It’s great, sometimes, to just totally tune out the world and, wow, what a world to go into for that escape.

Ken is happy in his own world.

Packaged very well and replete with everything you need for a vast array of uses, interchangeability and connectivity. First, the video glasses player (the hub for your cortical enjoyment). It possesses an audio/video input, USB port, headphone jack port, battery charging indicator, rec/play and mode LED indicators, menu and mode buttons as well as light touch left/right, up/down and select buttons to control your audio, video, photos and files to view each quickly. Power, record, reset, hold, A/V output port, SD card and battery slot (also comes with 512 SD card and rechargeable lithium battery (3.7V/1,800mA) (five hours on a charge). The sleek head mounted display (HMD) glasses contain the full color-viewing screen, nose bridge with additional bridge included for varying fit, stereo earphones hidden nicely on the inside of the expandable bows (slide the ear buds forward and out for placement in your ears), HMD connection cord to the player and two soft rubber above ear supports (keeps the glasses comfortable for long periods of wear). You also receive an AC adapter, power cord, A/V cable (connection to other devices), HMD player A/V cable, USB cable, separate pair of white earphones, 512MB SD card, user’s manual and CD-ROM for interface with player.

The MP glasses from inside.

This HMD unit came pre-loaded with a very slick Korean-produced music video that had me dancing to every beat and move as I listened and watched. The included photos of nature gave a very vivid portrait of the resolution displayed. I had to adjust the HMD glasses a little, but not much. I switched the nose bridges and both worked well. You can simply place a bridge in there, pull it out or push forward to get the best view for you. Personally, I didn’t use either, as I love having that big picture as close to my eyes as possible. The stereo sound was fantastic with no distortion and handled the on-board 192kbps Eminem song as well as others perfectly. Of course, I had to upload many of my own along with accompanying videos over the USB port. Everything worked fine. Even the CD-ROM was fast and very helpful. Being in the USA, you never know how the “translation” and printing of the user’s manuals are going to turn out, but every function, step and instruction was in very good English (I speak Turkish and Russian, but not Korean yet so they helped me out just fine there). Every portion of the user’s manual included photos of connections, examples, diagrams and more to guide you through any problem you may have using the ambidextrous product. With each of the functions, you can choose what you want to do and how you want to listen or view them. Every function has a preview screen, menu and mode to switch easily between them and set it up as you desire. The music mode also contains a graphic equalizer, displays the song, artist and file size. I also loved being able to use the hidden microphone for voice record function (.WAV files) to keep track of those earth-shattering ideas I come up with during the day/night. Use the various settings on the HMD screen to personalize each mode too. Repeat, delete, lock and select (for individual or all files). Create a slideshow of images and use the zooming function for the best view for you. Everything can be done right on your heads-up display. Makes you feel like you’re a pilot in an advanced fighter jet (yes, the same type of technology is used there too).

Maybe the biggest drawback: no hard-drive, only flash storage.

Now, you can either view images or video via other portable or fixed devices (real-time) or simply hit the record button for any multi-media you wish to take with you. My advice would be to purchase additional SD cards, especially 1 to 2GB. This is only one of a few drawbacks I found with the Accupix MP HMD Glasses. You can’t store an entire movie for easy playback. It works great, however, for music and images, and the ability to use SD cards makes for simple, compact storage where ever you go. And, of course, those SD cards are compatible with a whole host of other devices (digital cameras, video cameras, MP3 players, etc.). The glasses are outstanding in their ability to be cross-utilized with other multi-media devices if you want to just view images or videos without having to record. I love that feature most of all as, I’ve alluded to earlier, I can watch in total peace without being bothered by any external “noise” or distractions. Another fantastic feature of these video glasses is I am able to view any multi-media without having to be in a dark room or worrying about light diffusing the images. PMP/PVRs, DVD players, televisions, MP3/MP4 players or any other device (even OLED displays) are affected directly by light and skewing the viewing enjoyment. I love my PMP/PVR and MP3 players, but I if I’m at the park on a sunlit day, it is very difficult to see anything on them. The Accupix HMD experience eliminates that problem as it is just like being in a dark theater with sunshine all around you and no effect on my viewing pleasure. I can also use my PMP/PVR or DVD player as the “source” and be able to enjoy as many movies, images or files as they can handle (20, 40, 60 or even 100GB for PMPs) and be able to see every bit of them without worrying about light or angles.

No screen reflection problems in the Sun with those glasses.

Conclusion and Wish List
I’ve already used the HMD glasses in the park, full sunshine, in a vehicle traveling, home, office, hot tub, in conjunction with a PMP/PVR, DVD player, computer, MP3/MP4 player, television, VCR, video and digital camera, and, yes, even my video security system. All around, the Accupix HMD video glasses provide me with the most wide variety and versatility of multi-media enjoyment of any high-tech gadget I’ve seen yet with little on the negative side. I sure wish DARPA would give me a call and include Accupix in their future search for the latest technologies. I believe they would be a great match together and we would all benefit from it. Now, don’t worry about being a “geek”. Lead the “pack” and be one of the first around to be part of the future. Here is my “traditional” wish list of things I would love to see in future generations of the Accupix video glasses:

- Player with HDD capabilities similar to PMP/PVR with large storage capacity
- Infrared, wireless, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or FM capabilities
- Increased screen size (50 to 60”)
- Work with ongoing US/Asian next generation 3D development to allow viewing without 3D glasses
- Expand video and audio format adaptability (OGG Vorbis, Lossless, WMA, RAW, BMP)
- Include or make available belt clip or arm band for player
- Adjustable, flip-up/down HMD glasses
- High definition (HD) resolution
- Longer A/V cables to allow for easy in-home connection to other external devices
- Glasses and accessories bag or case for proper storage (optional or included)
