PS3 owners in Japan will be getting a firmware update that isn’t centered around fixing issues or upgrading functionality as much as it is centered on helping Sony get more greenbacks, which is assuming Japanese money is green.
The new firmware is 1.5 and adds the ability to send contactless payments via a PaSoRi reader and the Edy money card or Felica phone. All this is to allow you to fill up the Network Wallet easier so you can spend more money in the online store for movies. The update also includes the addition of WEP128 and WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES) for wireless security which is important if you are sending credit card info wirelessly. Word is the firmware update should be ready for Japan tomorrow. Via Engadget.
