UK TV channels expand online offerings

The BBC has announced that it upgraded its digital iPlayer platform, which delivers online episodes of popular programmes. In addition, ITV is working on a new online video initiative.

The BBC iPlayer will allow users to download (not just stream) full episodes of various shows. The network also said it is working on the possibility of launching a set-top TV box for on-demand BBC programming. The BBC service in particular is more fleshed out than any major US TV networks are offering. Rarely are full episodes of TV shows available for download from channels like NBC, CBS, and ABC.

ITV has also delved online with London Life, a series of local TV channels that showcase user videos that were submitted online.
