EA had another cool game showing in their E3 booth that I was unable to get hands on that looked great called Mercenaries 2. The level that was being showed off at E3 put the player in a combat helicopter and the graphics looked fantastic.

I like open world games where you can go where you want, when you want and that is what Mercs 2 is. You can buy, steal or blow up everything you see in the game from cars and vehicles to the buildings your enemies are hold up in.

You can drive sports cars, fly in helicopters, and roll in a tank. Basically, you do what you want with over 130 vehicles to choose. You can also recruit other mercs to build your own private military company.

Once you capture landing zones, you can use them to teleport yourself around the environment. There was lots of water in the level I saw and you can fly over the water, swim through it and drive boats across it. You can also get friends into the action in split screen multiplayer or online modes of play.

At one point in the demo level, you are flying your attack helicopter over a oil-drilling platform and fighting another larger attack copter. You can simply shoot at the attacking chopper, or you can shoot things in the environment, making them fall on the attacker. It was very cool to be able to shoot a radio tower and watch it knock the enemy out of the sky. I really wish I could have played hands on with this game, but the PR guy was all business and didn’t let the other geeks play. EA says Mercenaries 2 is due out this year, but no specific release date was given. Mercenaries 2 is coming for PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, and PC.
