The European Space Agency (ESA) is preparing for the maiden voyage of its Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) that can find its own way to the ISS. The ATV docks at the Russian end of the ISS and allows the transfer of supplies to the station.

Supplies carried on the ATV will include water, air, scientific equipment, food and clothing. The ESA says the ATV will also pump fuel into the space station and help maintain the ISS’ altitude with its own thrusters.

The maiden voyage for the ATV is set for Sunday. The total cost of the craft was 1.8 billion euros and at least 4 more ATVs will be built. The mass at launch for the ATV is about 20 tons.
