Only those who bet on HD DVD aren’t glad the format wars are over. Figures released today predict that Blu-ray hardware will rise to almost 30 million homes around the world this year.

The figures predict that 18.8 million Blu-ray units will be sold in 2008. That number breaks down into four million stand-alone players, 13 million PS3 consoles and 2 million PC Blu-ray drives.

By 2012 Blu-ray is predicted to sell 57.4 million units and be in more than 132 million homes around the world. "HD DVD’s withdrawal leaves the way open for Blu-ray to become a major revenue earner for technology vendors and content owners alike," said David Mercer, principal analyst at Strategy Analytics.
