Today marks 30 years since the first spam message was sent and 15 years since the term spam was first coined. The term Spam is through to have been coined by Joel Furr an administrator on the Usenet discussion system.

Furr told BBC News that the anniversary of the coining of the term was no cause for celebration. When first used the term was describing the bulk postings of unwanted comments to Usenet message boards. The term later became synonymous with unsolicited bulk emails.

Spamhaus says that more than 90% of all email is spam email. The sad fact is that if spam wasn’t effective in selling goods it would have died off years ago.
