Ofcom announced today that it would be launching four new HD channels in the UK. The four new channels are set to be available by the time the digital transition happens in 2012. Three of the four channels are expected to go live in 2009.

T3 reports that the BBC is getting one of the four HD spots and the other three are going up in an FCC style auction. The bidding will take into account the contribution made to public service broadcasting and efficient use of limited spectrum.

The only drawback to new channels is that you will have to get a new Freeview receiver to be able to get the new channels. Too bad for those who just bought a Freeview receiver, you will need a new one next year.
