Disney closed factories in Bangladesh

The Walt Disney Company has sold merchandise which ranges from T-Shirts to Coffee Mugs in foreign countries. But recently due to dangerous accidents it has decided to forgo production in countries such as Bangladesh as well as Pakistan. One of the reasons is the high risk nature of these nations.

A number of deadly factory mishaps forced the Walt Disney Company to stop the sales of its branded products in Bangladesh as well as Pakistan. In March, it sent a missive to its vendors and outlets in Bangladesh to start the transition. This was a major decision designed to secure protection and greater safety for its extensive team spread throughout the world. Besides these two there are three other countries where the production process will go out of style. According to CNN, they are Ecuador, Venezuela and Belarus.

Two incidents in the past have provoked this decision. One was the fire which erupted last September in Pakistan that led to the tragic loss of so many garment workers’ lives. Then there was the more recent breakdown of a factory in Bangladesh that left over 400 people dead in its wake. The plan by Disney was acted upon after a lot of forethought and soul-searching. It was finally decided that it was in the best interest of all those concerned to withdraw from the field. Bangladesh is a mere 1% of the world market share for Walt Disney. The other four countries constitute an even lesser percentage so it won’t make much of a difference to the Disney Company.

The choice was also made after quantifying various indices such as transparency, corrupt practices and violent trends. In all three of these, the countries mentioned were lacking. Meanwhile, Haiti and Cambodia, despite their futile records made it into Disney’s ambit. Production and sales won’t stop there. Disney has not been the only company to backtrack from volatile Bangladesh. Some other businesses such as H&M, Walmart and Gap have decided to pull out too. With close to 5000 clothing factories in Bangladesh, they are ready to abandon ship. Meanwhile other organizations like J.C. Penney, Benetton and Sears too have participated in the call for greater safety for factory workers and monitoring of conditions in Bangladesh.

The Disney Company is the #1 fun and entertainment enterprise in the world. Their real asset remains Disneyland while other offshoots such as the Disney Channel and a thousand and one articles of merchandise get sold worldwide. The withdrawal from the high risk societies will not affect the financial conditions at Disney. It will be as insignificant as a mosquito bite and the small annoyance will pass away in no time.
