Illegal GM Wheat in Oregon Under Investigation

The federal government has discovered the presence of illegally planted GM wheat in Oregon. Most of the genetically modified wheat was found growing in a field in Eastern Oregon and can cause commercial problems along the way as it is exported.

Our food supply is being tampered with. This can have very dangerous consequences especially as regards health. When genetically modified foods (called GM foods) enter the market they play dice with the internal makeup of everyone from human beings to animals by causing potential problems after digestion. According to Oregon Live, Nature is never wrong. Nature’s ways are perfectly suitable to us. But when man intervenes there is chaos. Close to 90% of the annual wheat crop in the region which includes Oregon goes to Far East countries such as Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. The news regarding the shocking discovery of GM wheat being among the supply has led to a reactive stance by Japan and South Koreans who have retreated from buying the crop. If the market situation turns ugly then the US authorities will have to run tests on the wheat crop to prove that they are not a GM food.

And the bill for the tests will be paid by the wheat industry. The wheat business stands to lose a lot of dollars in cash from this complication. Consumer groups are up in arms. Especially the Monsanto Company has come under attack for its unethical practices regarding disturbing the genetic makeup of crops. This event has the potential to disrupt the normal routines and livelihoods of Oregon’s wheat farmers.

Organic farmers have jumped on the bandwagon too to blame the GM industry for playing God. The incident took off when the herbicide glyphosate by the Monsanto Company failed to kill the wheat crop. It had developed a resistant strain and contained different genetic material from a normal wheat plant. This was confirmed after laboratory tests. It set off panic attacks and alarm bells among the community as well as the foreign buyers. The paranoia has grown to epidemic proportions as every form of food is being suspiciously seen as a GM variant. A thorough investigation is under way and only time will tell if more trouble lies in wait for US agriculture.

While genetic engineering and cloning technology have not necessarily harmed mankind they do naturally lead to a frisson of horror when things go wrong. The very thought of biotechnology as a Frankenstein’s Monster let loose upon an unsuspecting humanity conjures up images of fetuses used for making stem cells and artificial wombs. As far as GM crops are concerned, they are not designed to be digested as proper nutritional material by the human body. They lead to disease and are a health hazard. Some things should be left as they are particularly natural phenomenon that we don’t understand.
