IDC predicts PS4 will outsell Xbox One

PlayStation 4the outsell Xbox one according to research firm

Research firm IDC has announced that it expects the Sony PlayStation 4 outsell the Microsoft Xbox One this holiday season. IDC cites a number of factors, but the biggest factor the research firm cites is the PlayStation 4's lower price point. IDC also says that sales for game consoles globally for 2013 will be marginally higher than the total in 2012.

The total number of game consoles sold in 2012 was approximately 33,000,000 units. If 2013 is able to beat that number, even marginally, it will be the first time since 2009 sales have increased. IDC is also predicting that prepaid full-game, micro-game, and add-on download revenue from connected console channels will exceed the revenue of PC-based media the same type.

IDC also notes that connected console subscription revenue is also increasing. 2013 where subscription-based PC revenue is on the decline. "The number of online console gamers around the globe is on pace to exceed 165 million by 2017," saidLewis Ward, Research Manager, Gaming at IDC. "As a result, the opportunity to sell these gamers digital assets through Wii U, Xbox One, and PS4 online storefronts will grow substantially in the next several years."
