Superheroes are larger than life and so is Houston Texans defensive end J. J. Watt.  The former first round pick out of Wisconsin and 2012 Pro Bowl selection has been a beast since entering the NFL, but unfortunately finds himself part of a depressing Houston Texans team that may be in line to have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.  However, those fans brave enough to head to Reliant Stadium to watch the Texans (2-12) face the Denver Broncos (11-3) may earn a treat thanks to Watt . . . perhaps not a win on the field, but a comic book featuring the All-Pro.

Earlier this year, DC Comics and Gatorade teamed up to create a unique concept in the form of a comic book featuring Watt.  The title of the book is “MegaWatt,” which also serves as Watt’s superhero name.  Watt follows a similar path traveled by Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers who adopted the Superman persona, has been spotted on the field wearing Batman cleats and is also featured in a DC Comics and Gatorade-sponsored comic book wherein Newton is given the alter ego “The Blender.”

This week, the MegaWatt comic book that was previously available online only was turned into a hard form.  Texans fans will have the opportunity to get their hands on that prized piece of memorabilia later today.

“Anytime you get to work with DC and how well renowned they are . . . it’s a pretty neat deal,” said Watt in an interview earlier this week.  ”I know I’m trying to get as many copies as I can so that we can hand them out to kids through my foundation and things like that.  For me it’s cool to get the message out there about how I got to where I am today and just proving that there are always going to be doubters and there’s always going to be people out there telling me what you can’t do, but if you believe in yourself and if you put in the time and effort you can accomplish anything you want.”

The Newton and Watt comic books are part of a new promotion called “Gatorade Freaks,” which seeks to highlight the journeys various players have taken to become NFL players and amazing athletes.  It is an effort by Gatorade and DC Comics to provide fans (mainly teenagers interested in football) with fun education and engaging content.  According to Gatorade’s website, the company has plans to choose additional athletes to highlight in future comic book releases.
