A majority of Snapchat phone numbers and usernames, almost 4.6 million, got revealed in a hacking incident that shook the foundations of the service. This online leakage of vital personal information comes to us thanks to SnapchatDB which is an unofficial proxy site.

Over 4.6 million individuals in North America had their most important data hijacked off Snapchat by hackers. It all started with SnapchatDB, which opened alongside the actual site. This provided two file formats for the crucial phone numbers and usernames.

While the final two digits of each have been skipped in order to decrease chances of misuse, SnapchatDB has not made any promises regarding whether it will divulge this info in the future or not. Thus the situation remains precarious. And the biggest danger is that the inside knowledge that has been made explicit belongs to the majority of users.

The great hacking took place a week after concerns were aired by the execs of Snapchat regarding this issue. Thus they must have had a premonition of sorts. Carelessness in connection to the leakage is obvious. Snapchat has addressed the problem by saying that while matching usernames and phone numbers may yield vital information, in fact there is a rare chance of such a coincidence occurring in the first place.

This sounds like they are making light of a serious matter. Snapchat has a net value of $3 billion to $4 billion. It would be a shame for such a lucrative venture to lose its user base due to this massive and tragic breach in security.
