New York is to allow the use of marijuana on a small scale. The laws are to undergo a relaxation as per the initiative by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
Over 20 states have partially allowed the use of marijuana. Previously it was an offence that could cost you a fine and time in prison. But the times have changed. Marijuana is not only meant for recreational purposes, it also serves as a medical aid to help prevent pain.
New York, or the Big Apple, is the latest state to jump on the bandwagon. Under an impetus begun by Governor Cuomo, a move towards the legalization of the soft-core drug is underway. This liberalization in matters of policy towards intoxicants is a sign of the times we are living in.
However, the law has undergone a limited laxity only. It is not as it was in Colorado where thousands ventured out to buy the drug after the freedom to use it was granted.
The drug obviously has some benefits besides its so-called harmful effects. It heals chronic pain especially in cancerous conditions. And it also alleviates some of the symptoms of glaucoma. Some say this move by Cuomo comes at an opportune time.
The elections for governorship are about to come and Cuomo needs all the help he can get. Since New York lies on the East Coast it will not have such an extreme liberality in these matters as is to be found in California. It is an experiment that is being carried out and anytime it may fail.
