Update going out OTA starting now

Sprint subscribers that have the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone will want to hear this. Sprint has announced that the OTA update that will bring the GS4 on its network up to Android 4.4 KitKat is now available.

If you use this smartphone on Sprint and haven't seen the notification for the OTA update you don’t have to wait. You can go into your settings menu and get the update manually according to Mind of the Geek. The update typically rolls out over a few weeks in stages to give time to address any issues the update might cause and help control traffic to upgrade servers.

Sprint is the first carrier to offer the KitKat update to GS4 users. With Sprint launching the update, that likely means other carriers will follow suit soon. Interestingly, the GS4 update bringing the device to Android 4.4 on Sprint makes it the only device other than the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition to be running the latest flavor of Android.

Word is that Samsung has plans to update all of its latest smartphones to Android 4.4. There is no indication on how long those updates might take. Wireless carriers and device markers are notorious for taking a long time with updates. The carriers have to perform testing on the updates and the device makers take lots of time to customize the OS to their brand. The reason the Google Play version is already on KitKat is because Google controls the software on that device and it has none of the Samsung customizations that slow the update process.
