Black Friday Deals Tracker is Live

Samsung is throwing a party to announce the Galaxy S5, and you’re invited. The consumer electronics giant is expected to unveil its new flagship handset today during an event called “Unpacked 5″ at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. But you can find out everything as it happens right here on our live blog.

Ahead of the event, observers expect the Galaxy S5 to boast a big 5.2 inch 2560×1440 pixel screen, two high-quality cameras (16-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front) and a fingerprint scanner to rival the one Apple added to its competing iPhone 5s. But you never know what might happen at these events: Samsung might even show off new goodies like a high-end ‘luxury’ Galaxy model, or additions to its Galaxy Gear smartwatch line.

1:55 PM EST A string ensemble plays music on stage as we await the beginning of Samsung’s Unpacked event in Barcelona. After the event I’ll have an opportunity for hands-on time with the new hardware, so stick around and keep refreshing for continued news and analysis.

2:10 String ensemble is still playing. They’re good, but the crowd is getting restless.

2:13 The string section finishes their business, calming growing fears that Samsung is actually planning to announce a new line of electric violas. Lights go down and a video plays showing fashionable people engaging in potentially Gear-enhanced pastimes like fashion, fitness, and photography.

2:15 David Park from Samsung’s marketing team takes the stage. He gives a shoutout to the string section, now positively identified as the Barcelona Opera House Chamber Orchestra. Then he introduces JK Shin, president and CEO of Samsung Mobile.

2:20 Shin thanks the 200 million customers around the world who have purchased Galaxy S devices. Says customers highlight important areas where they want change and innovation; physical design, high-quality cameras, faster and seamless connectivity, and a phone that can help them stay fit. Then he reaches into his inside breast pocket and pulls out a Samsung Galaxy S5.

2:22 Wireless warriors: The S5 offers fast network connectivity through LTE Cat 4 and WiFi MIMO. Audience members nod their heads like they know what that is.

2:23 Photobugs: A new powerful camera has fast autofocus, color with HDR, and an improved user experience.

2:24 Fitness nerds: The S5 also has a built-in heart sensor and it’s water resistant, so don’t worry about sweating the thing to death if you wear it out on a run.

2:25 Shin shows off a new smartwatch, the Gear Fit, which has a curved back, apparently, and a fitness band instead of a boring old regular wristband. We saw the Gear Fit earlier today, so this isn’t a surprise.

2:30 VP of European telecommunications Jean-Daniel Ayme takes the stage to share some more details about the S5.

2:31 The back cover is perforated for “a comfortable natural grip,” which may help silence critics who’ve hated on the S4′s cheap plastic body. The phone will come in electric blue, charcoal black, shimmery white and charcoal goal, with more special designs and colors to come.
