The renowned fishing dock known as Gaviota Pier has been partially damaged by tidal waves. It happened suddenly and by the time the concerned authorities came to know of the demolished portions it was too late.

It was a historic part of the Gaviota Beach that got destroyed and washed away by the waves on Saturday. Famous for its surfers, beachcombers, campers and hikers, the Gaviota Pier is the focal point for those with wanderlust. And the local citizens love it.

The Spanish name “La Gaviota” means the seagull and properly defines the seaside sky of birds that is such a prominent feature of the region. Established in 1769, the windswept area attracted many visitors.

More than 500 feet in length, the pier had a huge portion gouged out of it by destructive waves. It was a favorite haunt of fishermen. In the words of one eyewitness, the waves started off slowly yet with the passage of time increased to such gigantic proportions that he and his daughter ran for dear life.

The pier shook and swayed and was carried away into the sea in the form of many splintered pieces. It was a very horrific sight. While there were no small vessels docked at the pier at the time, any future damage could prove costly in terms of innocent lives lost.

Some other piers too in the surrounding loci got physically smashed up by the rising tides. The Gaviota Pier will remain shut off till it has been repaired. The surfing enthusiasts and fishing aficionados will be having a tough time since they will be barred from entry due to the hazardous conditions. More than a 50 feet limb of the pier has become submerged due to the tidal overflow.

Usually when these sort of marine weather conditions start showing their true colors, havoc is wreaked everywhere within a radius of many miles. Therefore the authorities will have to be extra careful and vigilant over the next few days and weeks. Human lives and maritime equipment not to mention valuable property depend on it.
