Sofia Coppola who has previously directed Virgin Suicides along with Lost in Translation will direct an adaptation of Little Mermaid.
The version of Little Mermaid that Sofia Coppola aims at directing will be one that contains live-action. The classic novel by Hans Christian Andersen will yet again materialize into an enchanting film. There is already a discussion taking place between Universal/Working Title and Sophia Coppola. The director pof Atonement, Joe Wright was directing the film prior to Sophia Coppola. Instead his new venture will be a modification of JM Barrie’s children’ stories, known as Pan.
The Little Mermaid has been under production, or at least under contemplation as a production since the past few years. Abi Morgan, one of its script writers claimed that the original fairytale is such a great masterpiece that they had to stick to its actual ending where the mermaid gives up her existence for love. Caroline Thompson, who wrote Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands and the Corpse Bride, is also going to help with the script. Considering that Sofia Coppola’s previous work had adult themes, this will be something new for her as well as the audience.
