Two new Amenhotep III statues go on display in Egypt

Statues have returned to their original locations after thousands of years

Dailymail reports that scientists and archeologist sin Egypt have put a pair of new statures on display in Luxor, Egypt. The new statures are both of pharaoh Amenhotep III. The two giant statues are made from red quartzite.

According to the scientists, the statues have been placed in what were their original sites in the funerary temple of the king on the west bank of the Nile. The pharaoh is an important part of Egyptian history. The rule of Amenhotep III is said to be the cultural and political zenith of ancient Egyptian society.

The new statues are placed alongside the 3400-year-old memnon colossi, twin statues of Amenhotep III. The scientist who discovered the statues say that they "had lain in pieces for centuries." the statues are 36-feet tall and weigh 250 tons.

The largest shows the pharaoh seated. The alabaster head from another statue of the pharaoh was also discovered. The scientist says that while the statues lay in the field they were damaged by irrigation water, salt, and vandalism among other things. Near the seated statues, right leg is a nearly complete statue of the pharaoh's wife Tiye.

‘Every ruin, every monument has its right to be treated decently,’ Sourouzian said.

‘The idea is to stop the dismantling of monuments and keep them at their sites,’ she said, adding that what was required was steady ‘international funding’ to conserve such world heritage sites.

The ongoing work to conserve the Amenhotep III temple is entirely funded through what she said were ‘private and international donations’.
