Mekhi Phifer Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

"Divergent" star Mekhi Phifer is in serious financial trouble these days. He has recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month.

The former "ER" and "Divergent" star is in a state of debt these days. Mekhi Phifer reportedly filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month. TMZ has obtained Phifer's legal docs concerning his bankruptcy.

Mekhi Phifer has to pay a total debt of $1.3 million while he claims to have assets worth only $67,000 that include a "Leather Bed, a 12-year-old Segway (valued at $1,500), and a surprisingly large collection of firearms (one shotgun and several 29 mm pistols)."

He stated in his legal docs that he earns $7,500 while his monthly expenses are around $11,600. And his $1.3 million debt includes lawyers’ bills amounting to $50,000, $4,500 for back child support and the $1.2 million that has to be paid in back taxes.

Mekhi Phifer has two sons from two different women. The 39 year old actor has a son named Omikaye with ex-wife Malinda Williams and another son named Mekhi, Jr. with ex-girlfriend Oni Souratha.

Mekhi Phifer is not only known for "ER" and "Divergent" but also for his TV roles on "House of Lies" and "Torchwood." His movies include 2002's "8 Mile" and the 2004 "Dawn of the Dead" remake. According to CBS, Mekhi Phifer is expected to appear in the sequel of "Divergent" and in "Insurgent". They will hit theaters next year.
