The New York Knicks are closing in on a deal with head coaching candidate Steve Kerr, per multiple reports.

The New York Daily News' Frank Isola says Kerr's agent Mike Tannenbaum expects a deal to be finalized within the week:

"Steve Kerr is inching closer to finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Knicks, according to a source close to the TNT broadcaster.

"Kerr's agent, former (New York) Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, is still negotiating with the Knicks but the two sides are optimistic that a deal would be in place early this week.

"The plan is to have Kerr accompany Knicks president Phil Jackson to Chicago for the NBA draft combine that begins Thursday.

"Kerr has been Jackson's one and only choice since Jackson agreed to run the Knicks two months ago. Jackson and Kerr met face-to-face in New York two weeks ago and have been in daily contact over the telephone.

"Although Kerr, a former GM of the Phoenix Suns, has no previous coaching experience, making the jump from the booth to the sidelines is not unprecedented. Doc Rivers and Mark Jackson made the seamless transition.

"Jackson prefers Kerr because the Knicks president has previously coached him in Chicago and has remained close to him over the years. Kerr will also run the triangle offense, the system Jackson made famous while winning 11 NBA titles with the (Chicago) Bulls and (Los Angeles) Lakers."

In a separate update, Isola says the deal could be finalized after Game 5 of the ongoing playoff series between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers:

"There is a possibility that the deal could be completed after Game 5 of Thunder-Clippers. Kerr is not scheduled to work until Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals and could conceivably have five days off until Tuesday's game.

"Yahoo, however, reported that the Knicks are looking to low ball Kerr, who has never been a head coach or assistant coach at any level. Kerr did serve as the GM of the Phoenix Suns.

"If the two sides are squabbling over money that could mean that Garden chairman James Dolan is involved in the negotiations since Kerr has been Jackson's choice from Day One.

"Coincidentally, Kerr has told confidantes that his biggest concern about working at the Garden would be the involvement of higher ups in management, especially Dolan.

"Even Kerr's broadcaster partner, Marv Albert, was recently quoted as saying that one of the keys to Kerr and Jackson being successful would be whether Dolan allows them to run the club without interference."

ESPN New York's Ian Begley also confirmed Kerr is close to being Knicks head coach.

"Negotiations to finalize an agreement between Steve Kerr and the New York Knicks are progressing toward the final stages, sources close to the talks confirmed to ESPN New York.

"In the wake of's report Saturday that the Warriors fear Kerr is 'too deep' into talks with the Knicks to take the Golden State (Warriors) job, one source told ESPN New York that negotiations between Kerr and the Knicks are 'pretty far down the road.'

"Another league source with knowleged of the talks said Sunday the discussions would 'pick up' on Monday.

" reported on Saturday that the Warriors are increasingly pessimistic about their chances of convincing Kerr to turn down the Knicks in favor of Golden State. The Warriors are well aware the Kerr's relationship with Knicks president Phil Jackson gives New York an edge.

"Kerr is the only coach Jackson has interviewed for the head coaching vacancy, which was created when Jackson fired Mike Woodson and his coaching staff shortly after the end of the regular season.

"Earlier this month, one iteration of a Kerr deal discussed was a five-year contract worth $25 million, according to a source with knowledge of the talks. But terms have likely changed several times since then, considering the Warriors had shown interest in Kerr.

"A league source told's Ian O'Connor last week that Kerr's respect for Jackson outweighed the lure of taking a Golden State job that would leave him closer to his California-based family."

Begley also stresses the Utah Jazz, who did not renew Tyrone Corbin's contract, are also eyeing Kerr, according to a source who spoke with ESPN's Marc Stein.

The Los Angeles Lakers, who also have a head coaching vacancy after Mike D'Antoni's resignation several weeks ago, are also interested in Kerr, but the feeling wasn't mutual per another league source.
