Following complaints that the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII was mostly just a bunch of white guys, Disney and LucasFilm have announced two new additions to the film.

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years a Slave is the big ticket newcomer to the cast. More interesting to me is the casting of Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne of Tarth in HBO’s hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones.

I don’t mean to suggest that the addition of two women—and one woman of color—is merely a way for Disney to make Episode VII more diverse. Whether or not that was the intention, it’s still a good thing that the film will have some diversity, especially since both Nyong’o and Christie are terrific actors.

“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”

This simply reinforces my belief that Disney’s take over of the Star Wars IP is a very, very good thing for fans of the franchise. Strong casting, a capable director, and the return of the original screen-writer Lawrence Kasdan (who helped write the original trilogy) all point toward a sequel trilogy that will, hopefully, be a far better movie-going experience than Lucas’s prequels.

Now we can only wait in hope that the corresponding upcoming video games will be excellent as well.

I’m very curious to see what role Christie is cast in. She’s the perfect Brienne of Tarth, but I haven’t seen her in anything but Game of Thrones. Here’s hoping she isn’t merely type-cast.
