The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole on the disabled list on June 8.

Cole was placed on the DL due to "fatigue in his right shoulder," per MLB.com:

"Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole landed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday because of fatigue in his right shoulder. The move is retroactive to Wednesday.

"Cole, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, is 6-3 with a 3.64 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Cole first told the team of shoulder issues playing catch on Wednesday, the day after his last start.

"Huntington noted the team considered having Cole miss just one start, but ultimately decided a move to the disabled list was for the best.

"'It was a group decision, made in the best interest of the team,' Cole said following the Bucs' 1-0 loss to (the) Milwaukee (Brewers) on Sunday. 'We'll deal with it, rather than prolong it and hope for the best. It's been gradually onsetting, and I just didn't bounce back the way I antcipated after the fast start.'

"'We felt like it was probably better to be aggressive now, him some down time to get that fatigue out of there,' Huntington said.

"The GM said Cole will be activated when his 15 days on the DL are up, if 'everything goes to plan.' Huntington added all tests done on Cole's shoulder have pointed to fatigue and made no mention of structural damage.

"Left-hander Jeff Locke was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Sunday, and sinkerballer Charlie Morton had his assignment pushed back a day to face the Cubs on Monday in what would've been Cole's next start.

"'It's frustrating,' Cole said of his first career DL stint, 'but hopefully we can nip this thing in the bud. We've come up with some rehab work, and I feel much better than I did a few days ago. I hadn't experienced anything similar to this in the past. I just couldn't bounce back.'"

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jenn Menendez reports Huntington wouldn't go into specifics regarding Cole's shoulder issue. All he had to say was it's related to fatigue.

"Huntington declined to be more specific with the shoulder problem, other than to repeat the word 'fatigue.'

"'All the tests we've done so far have confirmed shoulder fatigue,' Huntington said. 'Gerrit feels good with it. We feel good with it. We'll see how the treatment goes...Fatigue is fatigue. Injuries are gray areas. He's got some fatigue in there right now.'

"Cole is likely to miss at least his next two starts and possibly a third, but Huntington left the door open for a longer rest period if necessary.

"'If everything goes as planned he'll come right back after the DL stint. But if we need more time, we need more time,' Huntington said."

Cole has a 6-3 win-loss record with a 3.64 ERA through June 8, per Menendez.
