Sources close to Apple told WSJ, " The Cupertino, Calif., company is asking suppliers to manufacture between 70 million and 80 million units combined of two large-screen iPhones with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays by Dec. 30."
Up to 80 million alleged iPhone 6 models (both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch version) will be available for sale initially. And this will be the largest ever initial supply of iPhones. Apple initially ordered between 50 million and 60 million units of both iPhone 5S and 5C models last year.
Why Apple has ordered a record number of iPhones for this year's launch? Sources close to the matter told WSJ that Apple is going to launch large screen iPhone models this year that the company think will surely attract all the consumers that are currently using big display smartphones of its rivals Samsung and more.
Apple's last year iPhone model has a display of 4-inches. And the sources said that Apple has ordered its suppliers to manufacture 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch versions of its new iPhone, widely called iPhone 6, to launch this year. Apple is expected to launch iPhone 6 this fall. And some recent reports are hinting that September 19th could the expected launch date of iPhone 6.
Apple has a history of launching its new iPhone in mid-September. So, 19th September looks to be the most appropriate date for the launch of iPhone 6 models.
Both the smaller 4.7-inch iPhone 6 versions and larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 versions are expected to have metal casings just like previous iPhone 5S. iPhone 5C's plastic casing was not become that successful. Hence Apple is not expected to launch an iPhone 6 with a plastic casing.
And the sources also claim that the alleged iPhone 6 models will come in multiple colors. However, it is not yet know that what will be the casing colors for both the new iPhone 6 versions.
iPhone 6 demand is expected to remain higher than previous iPhone models due to the introduction of larger screens and a redesign. Analysts are expecting that Apple's iPhone sales will rise by 15%-20% this year due to the introduction of large screens.
4.7-inch iPhone is said to go in production this month while 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is expected to go in production next month. It is not yet clear whether Apple will launch both the iPhone 6 versions simultaneously in September or separately by launching smaller iPhone 6 model in September while larger 5.5-inch model later this year.
Rumors are suggesting that the launch of 5.5-inch iPhone 6 version could be delayed by the end of this year or start of next year due to thinner and lighter screen manufacturing issues. Although, Apple has taken a new screen manufacturing partner on board from Taiwan that is specialized in making thinner, lighter displays. But it is not yet confirmed that when will Apple launch its biggest ever smartphone.
