Black Friday Newspapers to Cost Extra

This is sounds like a fake story, but it is not. Print newspaper subscribers are getting charged extra for the Thanksgiving / Black Friday edition.

In the good old days families around the country have been waiting for the newspaper boy to drop the Black Friday ad packed Thanksgiving edition. Then they would poor over the Black Friday ads to make a shopping plan for Black Friday. Those who still love this tradition will get charged extra this year.

The Chicago Tribune and the Detroit Free Press informed their subscribers that the Thanksgiving Day newspaper will cost extra because they are premium. The Chicago Tribune will charge $2 extra and the Detroit Press will charge the newsstand price of a Sunday edition ($1 extra cost).

Jim Romanesko (Via Consumerist) says in his report that both newspapers told him that subscribers can call to get a credit. So why charge in the first place? They just hope nobody calls because they just save $2, but then it is a matter of principle. The newspapers are likely making the most advertising Dollars on the Thanksgiving edition. Walmart, Best Buy, Target etc. sure pay extra to get their thick Black Friday Ads included in the newspaper.
