Vaughn will play opposite of Colin Farrell.

Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in the second season of HBO’s “True Detective.”

Sources have stated that the two actors will be joined by Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch, for the four lead roles on the upcoming second season of the hit HBO series.

Each season of the show is expected to be a self-contained story line that follows the characters down a completely different plot than the previous season. The premise will stay the same with detectives trying to investigate cases, although HBO hasn't hinted much on what the characters will eventually play for roles.

The 44-year-old star Vaughn is expected to play a career criminal in the series opposite to Farrell, who normally is known for his roles in comedy films.

Farrell isn't the high impact star that he was during the 90's through the last decade, but his name still carries weight in acting circles.

Farrell will play a compromised detective, Ray, who is divided between his loyalty to his bosses in a corrupt police department and a mobster with a hold over him.

The first two episodes of the new series will be directed by Justin Lin, the director behind the recent instalments of the Fast & Furious franchise.

The upcoming season is set to have a female lead role to balance out the role that Matthew and Woody played in the first season. Although it hasn't been confirmed, one of the female leads is set to play a sheriff with a troubled past and drinking problem.

HBO had a critically acclaimed hit with the first season of “True Detective,” which starred the Emmy-nominated Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

News of Vaughn's casting has provoked an angry reaction from fans of the show on social media, who voiced their anger on Twitter after the announcement was made.

User @JRehling wrote: "The mystery of True Detective Season 2 is how Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn's agents have blackmailed HBO into casting them."

While @JessicaValenti was more political, commenting: "Maybe in the next season of True Detective, Colin Farrell & Vince Vaughn can solve the mystery of the missing female and non-white actors.

The air date for the second season was not announced.
