While Windows 9 is the easiest name that comes to mind, the folks over at Microsoft are calling its new OS "Threshold."

There are major players in the tech industry that, because of their influence, every new product that they launch affects the market instantaneously. Microsoft is one of those companies. The company is poised to unveil its next-generation software operating system.

Windows 9 is a familiar word that comes to mind. Earlier leaks point to the resurrection of the coveted Start menu and a slew of UI tweaks. But our knowledge stops there. No one knows what Microsoft has in store for us next week in San Francisco, where the Redmond-based giant is holding its invite-only event.

While Windows 9 is the easiest name that comes to mind, the folks over at Microsoft are calling its new OS "Threshold." However, it's also possible that it will simply go under the name "Windows." Interestingly, Tom Warren of The Verge spotted a "Windows TH" listing on one of Microsoft's website.

Under the title are the words "the next version of the Windows client operating system." As noted by Warren, Windows TH, which stands for Windows Threshold, could be just the codename of the final product. For us, the name isn't as important as its software capabilities.
