Yahoo Acquires Photo Startup Cooliris

Cooliris was founded back in 2006 and was initially known for creating a “3D wall” for navigating photos and other media content.

A search engine pairing up with a photo editor might not really make much sense to you but that’s what Yahoo has been up to as it has been making arrangements to acquire a photo app maker called Cooliris which was founded in 2006. The photo app-maker has seen a long journey as it got till here and it was initially known for creating a “3D wall” for navigating photos and other media content. A separate platform was also created by it for mobile ads and it went by the name Adjitsu. Adjitsu was sold to Singtel’s Amobee division last year.

Only recently the company had diverted its efforts towards a mobile app which came with the name Cooliris and with an interface reminiscent of the old 3D wall. With this app, users were allowed to browse through photos from across services like Facebook, Flickr, and Dropbox. The team behind the app was quite hopeful for this app as it noticed considerable growth in the Asian market with help from partnerships with companies like Renren, Yandex, and Baidu.

In addition to this, Cooliris also launched a photo messaging app called BeamIt this summer. The company has impressively managed to raise a total of $27.6 million in funding from investors which included Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Deutsche Telekom’s T-Venture, The Westly Group, and DAG Ventures.

On the company’s website it was stated that “Yahoo has a clear vision and unwavering commitment to making mobile an intuitive and effortless experience. This makes Yahoo the perfect partner for Cooliris, and we are excited to come together to bring indispensable products to a worldwide audience.” Yahoo’s focus has been growing tremendously on mobile under the leadership of CEO Marissa Mayer and last month it acquired the messaging app MessageMe.
