Motorola is reportedly planning to launch a Moto Maker for its Moto 360 smartwatch. The Google-owned company successfully lured customers when it gave them the power to customize their Moto X phones, eventually saving Motorola from obscurity. Having a Moto Maker for its flagship smartwatch could strengthen Motorola’s status in the wearables market.

According to Wired, Motorola will allow customers to choose from three watch casings: champagne gold, silver, and black. Buyers can also choose from two bands–leather and metal–and there will be two sizes, for men and women, Wired adds. As for the faces of the watch, Motorola has allegedly prepared 11 designs, including a single-link band design, which appeared in a promotional video last year.

When asked if Moto Maker for the Moto 360 has always been the plan, Motorola said that it has always been the plan for the 360, except that it took them a while to fulfil it. Wired played with the new Moto Maker interface and described it as simple yet detailed enough to make you feel that the smartwatch is in your hands. You’ll see high-resolution images of the Moto 360, as well as textures on the band and reflections on the face.

While the idea is brilliant, Motorola could use this strategy across its devices, allowing customers to test and play the devices before buying them, more like an Apple Store or IKEA for Motorola products. Motorola tells Wired that this is only the beginning. What remains unclear is when will Motorola launch the said website for the Moto X. What is clear, however, is Motorola’s willingness to let its customers decide which is best.
