New challenges call for new strategies. With the introduction of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge – two new devices that will attempt to regain its status in the smartphone market – Samsung is refining its own virtual reality (VR) headset. Unlike the Oculus Rift, Samsung’s first VR headset, the Gear VR, is designed to work with the Galaxy Note 4.

If you’re not familiar, the Gear VR uses the phone as its display; users will need to insert the phone inside the VR. The same concept applies to the new Gear VR Innovator Edition, the Samsung’s updated version of the Gear VR headset. As expected, the device is optimized for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

Powered by Oculus, the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition promises to give users the chance to enjoy Samsung’s improved virtual reality experience. Entertainment-wise, the Gear VR Innovator Edition engages its users with high-resolution movies, TV shows, and photos “like never before,” minimizing pixelation and offering a wider field of view.

Apart from the performance enhancements, Samsung also improved the ergonomics of the device, reducing its size by 15 percent and making it more comfortable to wear. New hardware has been added; users can expect faster processing and improved graphics quality – important elements of a great virtual reality experience.

Furthermore, the headset can now be powered through its new USB port, which means more time and more fun. And, to top it all, Samsung has prepared a number of virtual reality content including games and applications from popular developers. The device comes with a replaceable face form, carrying pouch, and lens cleaning cloth. Samsung has yet to announce the price and availability of the Gear VR Innovator Edition.
