Apple reportedly bought FoundationDB

Apple has, according to a new report, acquired FoundationDB, a NoSQL database developer.

Apple has according to TechCrunch sources bought FoundationDB. The database developer mission was to provide data storage technology that frees engineers and companies to focus on problems other than building their data stack. To that end, FoundationDB has created a new generation of database technology that combines the advantages of NoSQL databases with the power and reliability of ACID transactions.

FoundationDB published on their developer community page the following statement that supports the repor that Apple has acquired the company:

"Thank you for your support of FoundationDB over the last five years. We’re grateful to have shared our vision of building the best database software and we strongly value your participation in this community. We have made the decision to evolve our company mission and, as of today, we will no longer offer downloads."

Apple has a tradition to not comment on small acquisitions like this one. Experts in high-speed and reliable databases are important to almost any software company. The acquisition is likely a mix of getting the FoundationDB technology, but also the engineering talent behind the company.

According to TechCrunch FoundationDB has raised $22.7m over its lifespan. Apple might have paid in the range of $50 to $100 million for the company.
