David Letterman has announced a star studded list of actors, musicians and politicians he will be hosting in his final round-up of The Late Show.

It’s been 33 years since David Letterman started to host The Late Show on CBS. 67 Emmy Awards nominations, 12 wins and countless other citations that include the Kennedy Center Honors, later, David Letterman finally announced his retirement.

David took over the show in 1993 when he missed out on the chance to host NBC “Tonight Show” when Johnny Carson retired. However the network chose Jay Leno and David Letterman reverted to CBS. He hosted his first show and from then on the kid who did gigs from college radio host to standup comic in the 1970s to becoming a regular guest on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” to 33 years on late-night television.

Bill Murray was the first guest on the show and it has built up since then. David has had a different style of hosting that strays from jokes to jokes overdone but it is undoubtedly a fact that David is the longest running TV host earning millions per year. His show is somewhere where the stars want to be seen at and as the show comes to an end for Letterman, stars will descend to bid this favorite host farewell.

The last five weeks worth of shows has a conundrum of stars who will be appearing on the show. Starting off Monday is Sarah Jessica Parker with Billy Crystal going in on Tuesday. Michael J. Fox and Amy Sedaris are Wednesday night’s guests, along with musicians Ben Bridwell and Iron & Wine.

Thursday Letterman chats up Kevin James and comedian Tom Dreesen, with music by Tracy Chapman. Alec Baldwin will be appearing on Friday, with music from John Mayer. It will be one after the other at the CBS’ Ed Sullivan Theater.

The stars that have been listed to appear are;

  • George Clooney,
  • Robert Downey Jr.,
  • Will Ferrell,
  • Tina Fey,
  • Tom Hanks,
  • Jack Hanna,
  • Scarlett Johansson,
  • Michael Keaton,
  • Steve Martin,
  • Bill Murray,
  • Don Rickles,
  • Julia Roberts,
  • Ray Romano,
  • Paul Rudd,
  • Jerry Seinfeld,
  • Martin Short,
  • Howard Stern,
  • John Travolta,
  • Bruce Willis and
  • Oprah Winfrey.

Musicians who will be appearing are more privy to Letterman’s own preference including the

  • Avett Brothers,
  • Brandi Carlile,
  • Elvis Costello,
  • the Dave Matthews Band,
  • Emmylou Harris,
  • Norah Jones,
  • Mumford and Sons,
  • Amos Lee and
  • Ralph Stanley.

It is yet to be confirmed who would be doing the last show with Letterman. Judging by his influence, he might actually get Leno to appear and leave his show for a night or he might get President Obama in that chair.

Most candidly, people are rooting for Bill Murray to do the last show as it would be befitting that the opening act closes as well. Stephen Colbert will be taking over the seat and let’s hope he is as great as his predecessor.
