Kate Beckinsale Will Return for Underworld 5

Theo James, who appeared in the "Underworld: Awakening", is also heading back to the franchise

Hollywood Reporter confirms that Kate Beckinsale has signed on to appear in the fifth installment of Underworld series where she will reprise her character of vampire “Selene” once more.

Theo James, who previously appeared in 2012’s Underworld Awakening, was also is in talks with Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems for the past few months to make a comeback in the next Underworld film. It has been confirmed now that he will also be appearing in the film, alongside Kate Beckinsale.

Kate Beckinsale, who starred in all four previous installment of Underworld, will once again be fighting against Lycans, a ferocious breed of werewolves. The first film “Underworld” was released in 2003, followed by “Underworld: Evolution” in 2006 and “Underworld: Rise of the Lyncans in 2009. The last installment was released in 2012 under the title “Underworld: Awakening”. The new chapter, which will go into production this October, is expected to maintain the continuity of its predecessors.

The upcoming sequel will be directed by Anna Foerster, a German-born American cinematographer who have been involved in the films like Alien Resurrection (1997), The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and 10,000 BC (2008) as a second unit director. The film is going to be Foerster’s first feature film as a lead director.

It will definitely be good news for ACLU, an organization that has recently blamed Hollywood for being gender bias in hirng female directors and pointed out that female directors are not working on even playing field. This will also be the first time when a women is helming a horror film led by a female.

The Underworld franchise did not go along with the same director in all of its installments. The first two installments were directed by Len Wisman. The next was steered by Patrick Tatopoulos while the last one was directed by the pair of Mans Marland and Bjorn Stein.

Cory Goodman is the scriptwriter of the film, however, no details regarding the storyline has been revealed yet.
