A gender rape prevention scheme for university women that was initiated lowered the risk of rape by half. It was found to be very helpful in cutting chances of being sexually violated.

A very comprehensive program was set up according to which females were taught various drastic methods of resisting rape. At the end of the study, the group that was told to put the methods into practice were nearly half as likely to get assaulted as the control group.

The study, published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, was entirely different in its approach since it dealt with the danger through hands-on training, whereas just handing the participants booklets didn’t work since they often chose to ignore reading them.

This is the first such program that has had a high success rate. It thus holds great promise for the future. The step was taken after a nationwide survey into how college graduates, freshmen and sophomores will ward of an attempt at rape.

The Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act is there but it is no guarantee against any haphazard brutal sexual aggression of any sort. Over 1 in 5 females have been subject to rash behavior and rough treatment some of it bordering on the obscene.

The presence of lots of intoxicating liquor on campus loosens inhibitions. Then total lack of parental control is another factor in the rape equation. Finally, jock culture with its high machismo and connotations of sexual conquest only multiplies the trend.

According to a leading authority on the subject, rape is given an impetus via the socialization of young females. When they are told to act lady-like and not show too much signs of protest or resistance, the result is that men take unnecessary advantage of the situation. The fact that women are told to be calm and affable means that they are vulnerable to evil-doers.

Women need to break through the barrier of being covert accomplices in their rape. They need to resist with all their might. Sexual assault can take on many forms. It might start off as a slight brushing of the fingers on a campus bus that was supposed to be accidental all the way to forcible entry in an isolated spot.

There are methods of prevention at every step of the scale that ranges from mild harassment to full-fledged rape. Everything from screaming out loud to martial arts may be used in the repertoire of rape prevention. And most of all women ought to be trained to fight for their rights rather than remain passive victims of male violence.
