Think your phone is going just a little bit too slow? Well, 4G is about to go the way of 3G when 5G is officially released. The new speed will make your old speeds seem like you are using a computer from the early 90s.

The official name for 5G (which we will probably never call it) is "IMT-2020" according to the Cult of Android, and it can read speeds of up to 20 Gbps. If you don't speak tech, that means that it will load data up to 20 times faster than you currently can. That means you can download and watch a 25GB Ultra HD movie in just 10 seconds. A regular movie, like the ones you can typically watch from Apple or Netflix, will take about 1 second to download. That means that when you go to download the latest episode of Orange is the New Black or Orphan Black, it will be done downloading by the time you click.

The news was announced by the International Telecommunication Union (better known as the ITU) and has been around for quite some time.

But speed isn't the only benefit of 5G, it will also bring in some other privileges that they haven't previously had. It will help with GPS and turn by turn navigation, as it will give drivers a longer time to react and will speed up the way the navigation updates - if there is a road blockage or delay, they will know about it 10x faster. It is also said to be more power efficient so that it won't drain your battery and it can be used in smaller devices.

There is still quite a bit of work that needs to be done, including figuring out what kind of radio technology is needed to deliver those ambitious speeds to an ever-increasing number of devices. The ICU doesn't really have a timeline in mind. They do plan on testing the product at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, Korea. However, wider testing won’t begin until 2019, and 5G won’t begin to make its way to consumers until 2020 - likely with the release of the newest phone of the time.

There is no word as to whether broadband will try to catch up.
