The dating app will now allow celebrities to have verified accounts.

Now swiping through your Tinder account is going to pit you against even more competition, the dating app announced today. People have been noticing lately that there are more and more celebrity accounts that have started popping up - some of them, like Hillary Duff, are real, but most of them (by most estimates there are at least 50 Taylor Swift accounts that are active) are faker than celebrity selfies.

In order to bring more attention to the app that is mostly used for hook ups and one night stands, Tinder is now offering celebrities the ability to make verified accounts. This will let people know that when they think they are talking to Darren Criss, they are actually talking to him and not a 50-year-old woman who weighs 450 pounds. As soon as today, Tinder will officially launched verified profiles, and just like on Twitter and Facebook, you'll now see a badge attached to high-profile users that designates they're exactly who they say they are.

"Each day, 26 million matches are made on Tinder, and we do our best to keep those matches real - that’s why we’re rolling out Verified Profiles," it wrote in a blog post.

"Starting today, you may see a verified symbol on some profiles. Now when notable public figures, celebrities and athletes appear in your recommendations, you’ll know it’s for real."

At the moment it doesn't look as though you can apply for verification, and must simply wait for the Tinder gods to deem you worthy.

Tinder says verified accounts are available to "notable public figures, celebrities, and athletes." The new feature has been a long time coming and follows a significant redesign of Tinder profiles that added built-in Instagram support. However, there have been some talks that they will also try to get verified accounts for everyone - though I'm not sure how that would work.
