  • Facebook redesigns its friend icon to promote feminism!

The new Facebook friends icon is more gender equal thanks to a new designer.

If you had previously looked closely at the Facebook icon you would have realized the woman in the icon is behind the man. The friends icon which is supposed to show 2 individuals was not an advocate of gender equality.

However a new designer for Facebook took note of the situation and has altered the icon to make it appear like the woman is in front and the man is right beside her. The new design is undoubtedly a symbolism of feminism and more neutral in terms of gender equality.

The designer who made it all possible is Caitlin Winner, who arrived on Facebook as the new design manager. According to Winner she is a woman who was educated in a women’s college and for her it was very hard not to red into the symbolism of the Facebook icon.

Winner explains the woman in the icon was quite literally in the shadow of the man and not even in a position where she could lean in.

Winner also revealed her first idea was to draw a double silhouette of a male and a female without any lines separating them, however the designs always ended up looking like a two headed mythical beast. Finally Winner abandoned the approach, and placed the female icon slightly in front of the man.

The whole project started when Winner had previously tried to simply tweak the female icon who had a chip on her shoulder. During the process Winner also gave the female icon a shapelier bob and even smoothed out the hair of the male icon. Winner also came up with a non-gender icon for a single icon however previously only a male icon was used.
