A new report says that the most downloaded app in Q2 of 2015 on the Apple App Store is the Facebook Messenger, Google is though still the top publisher with the most downloads unless Facebook owned apps are taking into account.

Early June Apple announced that app store downloads passed the incredible 100 billion mark. A new report takes a look at the app downloads in Q2 of 2015. The top downloaded app is the new Facebook Messenger with 48 million downloads. The Facebook app takes the 2nd spot followed by Youtube. The United States and China dominate the Top 20 most downloaded apps in Q2. European app makers only are able to rank in the Top 20 Highest Grossing Apps ranking because of high flyer Supercell (Clash of Clans) and King.com (Candy Crush Saga).

Supercell has not only the top crossing app with Clash of Clans, their other two games (Boom Beach, Hay Day) are also ranked in the top 10. Europeans just know how to make addictive games that drive massive in-app purchases. Other types of apps are apparently not what European app makers excel in. There are exceptions including Wunderlist and Runtastic.

According to Sensor Tower Game of War raked in over $120 million in Q2 but Clash is still on top with nearly $210 million. Clash of Clans, made a total of $23 per download during Q2. For comparison, Candy Crush Saga came in at $8.50 per download, and HBO Now for instance came in at $13.70.

Top Crossing Apps Q2

While Facebook has the top two downloaded apps, it's Google who is the overall biggest app publisher on the Apple App Store. Adding Facebooks subsidiaries Instagram and WhatsApp to Facebook's downloads than Facebook becomes the top publisher in Q2. Clash of Clans has been the top crossing app in Q2 2015.

Sensor Tower's analytics is based on over 75,000 apps connected to their App Store Optimization platform. The Estimated App Worth algorithm takes that data delivering accurate estimates of revenue and downloads for any app in the app store.

The firms proprietary algorithm takes into account many different factors including user numbers (on a per country basis, app market value), revenue rankings in each country (normalized by country and category), user reviews on a per country basis, app category, recent user growth compared to historical growth, and more.

The Sensor Tower model captures the transaction handled by Apple App Store and Google Play, which are In-App Purchases (IAP) and the price of Paid Apps, other revenues like sponsors, advertisement or Amazon App store are not included. The results of revenue analysis are showing the net revenue, which is after the 30% cut of the app stores, so the publicly published figures may be higher.
