Randy Orton defeated his arch rival Sheamus in WWE Battleground at the Scottrade Center in the former's hometown of St. Louis, Mo. on July 19.

Randy Orton's homecoming in St. Louis for WWE Battleground on July 19 proved to be a very sweet one.

Orton beat his arch rival Sheamus in front of a cheering crowd at the Scottrade Center on Sunday, per WWE.com's Kevin Powers, who describes the match as "a very offense-heavy contest" with Orton's unpredictability ultimately deciding the outcome.

From the get-go, Orton fed off the energy and vibe of the crowd. He stifled Sheamus' momentum with three straight Irish Curse backbreakers, per Powers.

Orton's experience helped him keep Sheamus at bay, eventually sending the latter into the steel ring post. Orton relentless pressure paid off as he was able to slam Sheamus on the announcer's table, per WWE.com.

Orton throws Sheamus back into the ring, the latter tries to unleash a Brogue Kick but Orton thwarts this with a power slam, per WrestlingNewsSource.com.

Sheamus resorts to his "Ten Beats of Bohdran" move but Orton successfully blocks it. Sheamus does a rolling senton instead and slams Orton onto the canvas.

He then tries to connect with a Brogue Kick on Orton but has it blocked. Orton does an RKO -- his vaunted signature move -- on Sheamus, but gets thwarted, per WrestlingNewsSource.com.

Orton then pins Sheamus in a corner where he punches him relentlessly with the Scottrade Center crowd counting along.

Sheamus gets out of the fix and trades punches with Orton, who delivers a superplex and DDT in succession after the exchange, per WrestlingNewsSource.com.

After Orton exeucted an RKO on Sheamus, he was staggered by another Sheamus' Brogue Kick and Cloverleaf. Orton struggled mightily with Sheamus' hold, but was somehow able to hold on to the ropes to break free, per Powers.

Sheamus, also known as "The Celtic Warrior," made his most fatal mistake of the evening when he pulled his opponent to his feet in the middle of the ring. This gave Orton an opportunity to execute another RKO and finish off Seamus, per WWE.com.

According to Bleacher Report Featured Columnist Mike Chiari, Orton lost several WWE Heavyweight Championship Matches to Seth Rollins. He even lost to Sheamus in the Bank Ladder Match.

Despite the turn of events, Chiari stresses there wasn't much excitment leading up to the contest since Orton and Sheamus have battled one another so many times in the past. The lack of mic time and rivarly hype didn't help matters either.

Nonetheless, Chiari dubs their latest WWE Battleground match as "solid" with an unpredictability which could have resulted in the contest going either way.

Regardless of the outcome, Chiari feels both grapplers "showed flashes of briliance Sunday that should bode well for them moving forward."

In other WWE Battleground action, King Barrett defeated R-Truth while the Prime Time Players beat The New Day in the WWE Tag Team Championship Match, per WWE.com.

Bray Wyatt beat Roman Reigns while Charlotte emerged victorious in the Triple Threat Match against Brie Bella and Sasha Banks on July 19.

In the prelude to the main event, John Cena beat Kevin Owens in the United States Championship Match. The WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match pitting Brock Lesnar against Seth Rollins was declared a no contest, per WWE.com.
