Microsoft Edge Browser Marketshare is Tiny

Windows 10 brings a new browser. Microsoft Edge has ways to go to replace Internet Explorer in terms of browser marketshare.

With Windows 10 comes a brand new browser from Microsoft. Microsoft Edge is replacing Internet Explorer. It has a long way to go to do so.

When reviewing several browser market share analytics services, the Microsoft Edge marketshare is minuscule.

Microsoft claims that 14 million have upgraded to Windows 10 in the first 24 hours.

The new Microsoft Edge browser barely shows up in browser marketshare reports yet.

The marketshare of Edge is still way below 0.1% across several services we reviewed.

There is a general issue in finding accurate browser market share results as reports.

Net Applications for instance tracks Internet Explorer with 53.47% marketshare in July as the top browser.

Clicky and Statcounter report Chrome as top browser with over 50% market share.

The recently launched Digital Analytics Program from the government gives a more balanced view at the browser marketshare.

The data comes from a unified Google Analytics account for U.S. federal government agencies. According to, Chrome has 38.4%, IE has 24.8% and Safari has %20 marketshare. This data has though a domestic focus.

All browser marketshare reports have in common that the Microsoft Edge browser marketshare is almost not trackable yet.

Webmasters trying to find out if Windows 10 Edge users are visiting their site have a hard time to find out in Google Analytics.

Google has not added Microsoft Edge as a browser version yet.

The Microsoft Edge is also using a universal user agent that makes sniffing it out difficult. This is by design. Microsoft does not want websites to identify Edge.

The Microsoft User Agent String is: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/42.0.2311.135 Safari/537.36 Edge/12.10136.

The Windows maker does not want to have custom content served to Edge as the browser is more WebKit than IE11. Microsoft aims at fixing bugs in Edge rather than having web designers fixing bugs for them in the web page code.

To detect Microsoft Edge in Google Analytics, webmaster have to look at the Chrome Browser version "42.0.2311.135" and the Operating System Version "NT."

Microsoft markets Edge is the first browser that lets you take notes, write, doodle, and highlight directly on webpages.
