Google just steamed rolled everyone with the announcement of Alphabet. While Google founders head up the new Alphabet holding company, Sundar Pichai got promoted to CEO of Google.

The Google founders announced Alphabet yesterday. It is a new structure that Larry Page and Sergey Brin are using to organize all the different ventures they expanded over the years. From Android, Youtube, Google Cars and Wing drones.

All the new products and businesses Google has launched are though not paying the bills. The cash cow is still the Google search engine and its advertising. Larry Page and Sergey Brin gave Google into the hands of former senior vice president of product Sundar Pichai. 43-year-old Sundar Pichai has the most important job inside the Alphabet company. He needs to make sure the money keeps flowing.

Google is in good shape and just posted revenues of $17.7 billion and revenue growth of 11% year over year for the Q2 quarter. Pichai has a good starting point. To make it clear how important Google is for Alphabet. In Q2 only $1.7 billion of the $17.7 billion revenue came from other products and services than ads. This means 90% of revenues are from Google Ads.

Alphabet is investing into the future with many of the ambitious projects, which is exciting, but there are no revenues from theses projects yet. As long as the Google ads keep on delivering this is not a problem and Sundai Pichai needs to make sure that this is the case in the coming years.

Sundar (Sundararajan) Pichai is an Indian national and was born in Chennai, India in 1972. He got educated at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University and Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

Pichai joined Google in 2004. He was involved initially as product manager for Google Chrome and Chrome OS. Over the years he added other Google products including Gmail and Google Maps under his responsibility. In 2014 he became the Google Product chief.
