The captain, who was on Deadliest Catch, has passed away at the age of 50.

It is a sad day for the Discovery Channel. Tony Lara, who first appeared on "Deadliest Catch" in 2011, has died at the age of 50. CNN confirmed the news with law enforcement in South Dakota and the Facebook page for "Deadliest Catch."

Lara died while he was on vacation in Sturgis, South Dakota. The town's Sheriff Ron Merwin confirmed that he was there for the annual motorcycle rally that takes place every August.

No cause of death has been confirmed, and an autopsy is said to be performed later today.

On the show, Lara was the captain of the boat the F/V Cornelia Marie after the death of the beloved Captain Phil Harris. He was on six episodes of the shows, which follows around several different crews who work crabbing on the Bering Sea southwest of Alaska.

"May you RIP Captain Tony Lara," the official Facebook page for the show posted. "We know that you are up in heaven watching over the Cornelia Marie and rest of the Bering Sea fleet."

The captain that is currently in charge of the Cornelia Marie, Phil Harris' son Josh Harris, said that Lara was "a true friend."

"Tony was always there for the Harris Family," he said in a statement provided by the show's publicist. "He offered his support and his advice. He taught and he educated. At the end of the day, Tony made all of us just a little bit better."

In another statement that can be found on the Cornelia Marie's website, the crew praised Lara's willingness to help.

"No conversation was cut short. No call unreturned. When the Cornelia Marie needed him, he was quick to respond with a "When and Where," the unsigned statement on the site says.
