The food supply of the planet may dwindle due to the threat of global warming.

Drought, inclement weather, floods and rainstorms. These are just some of the salient features of climate change. There are several more. All in all, global warming has affected the food supply of the planet in a negative manner.

The shocks to the system have caused many crops to wilt and die off. This in turn has led to rising prices of staples such as wheat, rice and corn. We are entering the 21st century in earnest. And the shifts in climatology could cause a rude awakening from so-called utopia. In fact, everything might as well end up in dystopia.

The crops will face severe weather conditions during seven out of ten years. This is the scenario that confronts us when we reach the end of this century. The world we leave behind for our children might be the worst possible hovel.

And the reliance on globalization and the free enterprise market could spell doom. The African Continent and the Middle East will bear the brunt of the burden.

Just seven years ago, the grain sheaves showed a poor turnover. Cereal prices in the markets rose. The rates became 2.8 times higher than around the year 2000. Four years ago a drought in Russia hit the fragile economy of the nascent nation quite hard.

The planet undergoes heat wave after heat wave. And it becomes more and more difficult to protect the food that mankind grows for its nourishment. After 2040 it will be a gradual deterioration.

And beyond 2070, things will begin to disintegrate, according to the study by the UK-US Taskforce on Extreme Weather and Global Food System Resilience. This will lead to a crisis of confidence. The heaven predicted by “End of History” theorists such as Francis Fukuyama will be a far cry.

These severe jerks and jolts to the system of finance and food may cause a decrease of 10% in the food supply. This is enough to cause widespread famine and restlessness among the poor.

While not everything is clear yet, the writing on the wall is easy to read. Governments have to stop their invasive policies. Especially the scientific rape of Mother Nature has to end.

Otherwise, it is a situation of slow and inevitable decline. The shocks to the system will become more and more frequent as well as intense. What's needed is a thorough re-appraisal of the choices before us.

Do we want to poison the environment to the point where it is toxic. Or do we want a pristine world where the motto is “live and let live”. Either option lies in our own hands.
