A two-year-old Indian boy was born with three penises.

The boy underwent surgery at Sion Hospital last month. He is a resident of Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh. His mother brought him to doctors for treatment, per's Maitri Porecha.

Dr. Paras Kothari is the pediatric surgery head of the hospital. He told Porecha the boy has Diphallia.

"The boy suffers from Diphallia. At birth, he had three penises, but he was able to pass urine through only one of them," he said.

Diphallia is a medical condition "when a boy is born with two or more penises," per The penises have the same dimension in most cases.

A male with two penises can urinate from one or both of them, per

Porecha says two of the boy's penises had erectile tissue. This tissue activates the penis' sexual function. The third penis did not develop.

Dr. Vishesh Dixit is another pediatric surgeon at Sion Hospital. He confirmed to the boy also has no anus:

"There was a huge soft boney mass and tissue to which the penises were attached. However, the anus was absent. Two years ago, after his birth, the doctors in Uttar Pradesh had created an incision on the lower left side of his stomach, in a procedure called Colostomy, to let the excreta pass through a tube.

"The two functional penises were fused into one, by wrapping a mass of skin around them. Further, an anal path was created through the boy's rectum to facilitate the passage of excreta."

"The incision, through which he currently passes excreta, will only be closed after the anal path that has been created by us heals and is capable of function," Kothari said.

The complex surgery lasted six hours, per

According to Porecha, the boy will undergo another surgery later this week. Doctors will close the incision on his stomach.

The boy will enjoy normal fertility and sexual function when he becomes an adult. Doctors confirmed this to Porecha.

"We wanted our boy to lead a normal life, and are grateful to the doctors who have conducted a successful surgery," the boy'd uncle told Porecha.

Doctors classified the boy's case as rare. Porecha says there have only been 100 recorded cases since 1609.

That year, Dr. Johannes Jacob Wecker reported a diphallia case in Bologna, Italy. Dr. Wecker saw a male corpse with the condition, per

Diphallia has links to other abnormalities. Some of these are gastrointestinal defects and double bladder, per
