A massive ice meltdown has caused a buildup of the walrus population on the Alaskan shore.

Pacific walrus populations have been stranded on Alaska’s shoreline. This is thanks to the melting of huge chunks of ice. This again is a regrettable side effect of climate change.

The habitat destruction has left these poor animals with nowhere else to go but Alaska. It’s been a decade or so since the walruses have been venturing to Point Lay. They rest on ice floes along the way and get their nutritional needs met en route there too.

The walruses dive into the freezing waters in search of food. And they leave their vulnerable pups on the ice floes. The Alaskan authorities have handed out safety warnings to nearby inhabitants.

That is because the walruses are prone to stampedes when provoked. They are sensitive creatures that are scared of loud noises. And when they stampede their pups are bound to get squashed. That is underneath their massive frames.

The walrus migration is present there in record numbers. And it occurs just seven days prior to President Obama’s visit to the region. He is to spread the message of implementing better climate change strategies.

The walruses number in the thousands, according to Weather.com. There are approximately 35,000 of them on the Alaskan shores. They normally gather on the Russian shores for summers. But this time their plans have all been turned topsy turvy. And man’s interfering nature has played a large part in this.

These creatures have been driven to this desperate measure. This is thanks to the changes in weather. When they sense impending danger, they are bound to change their behavior. And it is to maximize their security and minimize any threats.

While it may serve as an ideal opportunity for tourists to take pictures of these huge beasts, in fact, they are very vulnerable to human intervention.

The hunters are also on the lookout for these walruses. Since they serve as a food source for so many people of that region, there is the further threat of massive poaching by those who don’t care for the legality or illegality of the situation.

These walruses will stay put throughout September and October. This in itself is a hazard. So many sea beasts collectively haunting a single spot may prove an invitation to starvation and pestilence among their ranks.

Human beings can only do so much thanks to the size and nature of the walruses. They cannot be manhandled to some other spot on the globe. It is indeed a conundrum we are facing thanks to our tendencies of extreme instrumentality.
