  • Sony Studios Changed the Movie “Concussion” to Ward Off NFL Criticism

It has been found that Sony Studios changed the movie “Concussion” to ward off criticism from the NFL. Will Smith stars in the film as Bennet Omalu.

The movie’s title says it all. Concussion was all about NFL players and their deaths and dementia-related illnesses due to head injuries. Most of these cranial accidents occurred on the playing field.

The NFL tried to cause an erasure of the whole issue. The movie has as its hero, actor Will Smith, who plays Bennet Omalu. His work helped pinpoint what was going on at the heart of the NFL’s players’ lives.

But Sony found itself at a loss as to what to do after the movie was made. The forces it had to contend with were too damn powerful to let the matter rest. The NFL happens to be a multibillion dollar enterprise that entertains all of America via the game of football.

Too many toes had been stepped on. Sony had to ease the commentary made in its film just to appease the NFL bosses. This was revealed just recently thanks to a couple of emails that got leaked.

Over a dozen emails have been hacked and they show clearcut evidence of Sony Studios and Will Smith negotiating over the fine print in the movie. The film was lent some emollience for the sake of the NFL’s reputation.

It was made to look like a case of spilling the beans rather than a direct attack on the powerful football institution. The emails bent over backwards to sound apologizing. Will Smith was said to be just an actor and not a person who was anti-football.

The movie was just showing the mirror to some of the stuff that went on in the big bad world of jostling and scuffles. Incurred bruises are just a natural consequence of being thrown into the world.

The view expressed was that it was just a public safety message. In no way did Sony want to wake up the sleeping giant that was the NFL. Some of the scenes were expunged from the movie, according to NYTimes. The movie will come to theaters in December of this year.

The trailer is out though. Will Smith is shown as a doctor who diagnoses a new disease among NFL players. Termed C.T.E. it was a degenerative disorder that resembled dementia. And the reason behind this malady was constant exposure of the heads of the players to shocks.

The game of American Football is a full-contact sport like basketball or karate. The NFL has paid many dollars in out-of-court settlements to former players who suffer today thanks to head injuries in the stadium.
