The Can’t Buy Me Love star died due to drug overdose in her system as determined by the authorities upon her autopsy.

Young, famous cheerleader Cindy Mancini who pretends to fall in love with high school nerd played by Patrick Dempsey in the 1987 flick Can’t Buy Me Love star, Amanda Peterson is long gone now. The young actress was found dead at her home in an apartment complex in Greeley, Colorado, on 5th July. The young star had left acting at the age of 23.

Her father had accounted that she has been medically unfit for the past two years suffering from conditions including Pneumonia, sinusitis and sleep apnea. The actress’ medical condition has been deteriorating.

Matters were made worse when her house was invested by moss and she had to move out. She had been missing since June 31st before she was found dead. The police suspected no foul play in her death.

Her body was taken to perform an autopsy to confirm her cause of death. The Weld County Coroner in Colorado issued her autopsy report. In the report it is mentioned that Peterson had a variety of prescription drugs in her system. These include benzodizepines (anti-anxiety meds), opiates and phenothiazines (an anti-psychotic medication) and marijuana.

One of the other drugs found in her system was Gabapentin. It is a medicine prescribed for pain. The coroner reported that it was present in her body at an elevated level of 6 times the normal dosage.

The toxicology report revealed that a week before her death she told someone she ingested morphine medication she got from friends. The reports say she was self-medicating to control pain.

As for why she died, the final cause for death in the report was mentioned as the "morphine effect". The effect is said to cause respiratory failure, according to TMZ.

Following the autopsy, the actress was handed back to her family. She is survived by her husband David Hartley, her two children and her parents. Her brief portfolio of movies include 1982’s Annie, 80’s films Explorers, The Lawless Land and Listen to Me.

Her TV shows include A Year in the Life and Doogie Howser, MD. Her final screen credit was the 1994 film Windrunner. Her most acknowledged work is still Can’t Buy Me Love alongside Patrick Dempsey.
